Midterm at-risk progress reports are issued by instructors for students who may be at-risk of not passing their class for a variety of reasons.
Weeks 7–10 are a critical window in your semester:

 

There are still exams, assignments, and class sessions ahead. An at-risk progress report is a nudge to get support, not a punishment. Students who act on-time are more likely to finish the semester in good standing.

Now is the time to take action

Week 7 through week 10: Your professor flags a concern through Navigate. You will receive an email alerting you right away.

Starting week 7 and onwards: Cane Navigators and Success Advocates reach out to any students with 2+ at-risk progress reports to invite you for an appointment to discuss any concerns and opportunities for support.

Between midterm and finals: With a success plan in place, whether it's tutoring, office hours, or an advisor meeting, you have an opportunity to improve your academic performance and finish the semester strong.

Common reasons for at-risk progress reports:

Missing or Late Work

One or more assignments haven't been submitted or were turned in late. Talk to your professor to discuss if there opportunities to get caught up.

Low Exam or Quiz Grades

Your test scores are below the passing threshold. A different study strategy or tutoring support can help you recover before finals.

Attendance or Engagement

You've missed classes or haven't been showing up in the course platform. If something's going on, we have resources to help.

Resources you can use - right now!

Your Professor

Attend office hours, or arrange some time to meet with your professor to discuss your progress in the course. This is often the best place to start so you can better understand where you stand, and what opportunities you may have to improve your grade.

Frequently Asked Questions About Progress Reports

  • Does a progress-report affect my GPA?

    No. Progress report at-risk alerts are tools to let your success team and you know of your progress in the course. They don't appear on your transcript, affect your GPA, or go to external parties.

  • Can I see what my professor wrote?

    Yes. Open the Navigate360 Student Mobile App or log into Navigate to view the specific reason(s) and any written comments from your instructor.

    To view your progress reports in the Navigate360 Student mobile app:

    1. Open the app and select the grid icon next to the middle icon.
    2. Select ‘My Docs,’ then select ‘Progress Reports.’
    3. Open each progress report to review the reason your instructor submitted it and any comments they included.

    Additionally, any comments your instructor provided will be included in the alert email you receive. 

  • Will my parents be notified?

    No. Per FERPA, your academic records are confidential. Alerts are only visible to you and authorized UM staff who are supporting you in your academic journey.

  • Is it too late to catch up on the course?

    It depends on the course structure and syllabus, but in many cases, you still have an opportunity to catch up if you take action. Alerts are timed during weeks 7–10 so there are still graded opportunities ahead. 

  • I am struggling with something personal - not just academics. Can I still get help?

    Absolutely. You can reach out to our Office of Success Advocacy to discuss the challenges you are encountering, and get guidance on how to connect you with the full range of UM resources: counseling, financial aid, the Dean of Students Office, housing support, and more. You don't have to figure out which office to call - we'll help you navigate it!
